"I can't recommend Pimalai highly enough !!!"

We spent 12 nights in a Pool Villa at Pimalai enjoying the peace and tranquility after a hectic week in Ho Chi Minh City.

The location itself is stunning with beautiful views over the bay - particularly from the upper pool and restaurants. The resort is, essentially, split into two parts; The slightly older Beachfront and bayfront accommodation are in the lower part of the resort together with three restaurants (one down on the beach itself) and a bar. The upper part of the resort is where the pool villa's are located together with another bar and restaurant.

We stayed in a Bayfront room 5 years ago and the accommodation was of a good standard at the time - I don't know what they're like now. The last couple of years we have stayed in one of the one-bed Pool villa's in the upper part of the resort. These are fantastic. They are set around a central pool with seperate buildings on either side. On one side there is a bedroom with sliding doors which lead out to a seperate sun terrace.

There is a large Sala (covered day-bed) beside the pool, which is good for lounging on when the heat gets too much.

On the other side is a seperate living room, fully fitted kitchen and toilet. The kitchen is so that the chef can cook for you in the villa if you wish. The living room has sofa's, TV, CD player and sliding doors to a seperate, covered veranda with dining table and day bed. This is a great spot to relax in the shade - there's even a celing fan on the outside veranda to keep you cool if there is no breeze. The air-con in both rooms is excellent. Keep the doors closed when you are not using the room though as we were burgled by a monkey !!!

The roads in the upper part of the resort, although relatively steep, are an easy enough stroll. That said, the staff are perfectly happy to chauffeur you back and forward from the restaurants if you can't be bothered walking.

Some previous comments suggest the English and service of the staff is patchy - this is not my experience. I have always found the staff excellent. They are always willing to help, they are always polite, and they always have a smile on their face. The restaurant/bar staff are excellent and always have a chat with you when you visit. Room staff are also very efficient and friendly.

I don't think the restaurants are particularly expensive - not by UK standards anyway hence why we tend to use them most of the time. The only thing that is excessively expensive is imported wine but that is due to a Thai Government import tax of 390% !! There is a choice of other restaurants outwith the resort which are just a short walk along the beach.

Transfer from Krabi is simple and, depending upon the season, is either by private Pimalai power boat from their own jetty or by car, coupled with a 10 minute local ferry. The boat transfer round the island is very scenic with lots to see - watch out for Monkey Island and the flying fish.

This was our third visit to Pimalai and we are returning again in October '09 after a week touring central Vietnam.

I can't recommend Pimalai highly enough !!!
