Scubafish At Pimalai promises small groups (max 4 divers per guide), an unrivaled reputation for high quality, personal service, experienced dive guides who know the sites and their secrets well and a commitment to ensuring your diving holiday exceeds your expectations.

With our reputation for high quality personal service, dedication to the marine environment and love of the aquatic world, we offer you a unique diving experience at some of the best dive sites in Thailand.

Scubafish At Pimalai is open all year round and we offer daily diving and snorkeling trips all year. The very best times to dive in Ko Lanta are: mid-October - April and July - August. May and September are the least predictable weather-wise - so trips may not be possible every day.

The high season runs from mid-October to mid-April. During this time our boats are moored in Kantiang Bay and trips depart directly from the floating Jetty in front of the resort.

From Mid-April to mid-October we moor our boats in Lanta Old Town on the East side of the island. The weather can be a little unpredictable and we cannot guarantee that the boat will be able to go out every day, although most days should be possible. This time is during the 'rainy season' (sometimes we have rain every day, sometimes there is no rain & pure sunshine for weeks on end!) and it's a great time of year to see a huge variety of marine life. It's like 'spring' underwater and is when the marine activity seems to peak. Many juvenile fish are born during this time and seek shelter near the reef alongside huge swarms of tiny glassfish and baitfish. This attracts the larger, hunting fish towards the reef who come in to look for a snack! You can often see large schools of barracuda, rainbow runners and travelly and there's plenty of action to watch in the blue. There are also fewer divers at the dive sites than during high season and the visibility is usually better too.

Scubafish At Pimalai values the safety of all divers, so please note that scuba-diving trips are subject to sea/weather conditions. Guests are also kindly asked to book their diving trips and courses in advance to avoid disappointment. We tend to be busiest during December, January & February, so it is a good idea to book ahead during these times, especially if you have specific dive sites or dates in mind, to avoid disappointment. During the rest of the year a day or two's notice is usually enough. The latest we take bookings is up to 5pm the evening before you wish to dive.

For all diving and scuba-related enquiries, please contact the dive centre directly at diving@pimalai.com.

Plunge (Dive Sites)

Scubafish At Pimalai offers a choice of over 40 different dive sites reachable by day trip from Ko Lanta. We are Ko Haa and Hin Daeng and Hin Muang specialists, being the closest dive centre in the world to these famous sites. We offer trips to Ko Haa everyday and make 3 trips per week to Hin Daeng & Hin Muang - please see below for a brief description. We offer a wider range of dive sites than any other dive centre on Ko Lanta.

If you are staying in Ko Lanta - you absolutely should not miss the diving at Ko Haa. Ko Haa is a lesser-known group of islands that offer stunning diving year-round with spectacular visibility, pristine corals and the famous caverns & chimneys to explore (you need 2-3 days diving to see all the best parts). Ko Haa is an underwater photographer's paradise with crystal clear waters and a huge variety of macro-life including Harlequin Shrimps, Ornate Ghost Pipefish, Frogfish, Sea-Moth, prolific numbers of brightly coloured Nudibranches and Tigertail Seahorses. In terms of larger marine life you have a good chance to swim with Turtles, enjoy large schools of barracuda and yellow snapper, play with friendly puffer-fish, relax in the Lagoon and marvel at the famous caverns known as 'The Cathedral' and 'The Chimney'. We have been particularly lucky with Whale Sharks sightings at Ko Haa this season, with sightings occurring daily during the last month.

We also have a new wreck site - the 'Kled Gaeow Wreck' - a retired Gunship that was purposely sunk just off Phi Phi Ley on the 19th March 2014. The 50m steel-hulled vessel lies at a depth of 26m, with the top of the tower at around 14m. There are a multitude of other fantastic sites in the Phi Phi area, packed in amongst the rugged underwater topography at these famous sites, you can find Leopard Sharks, huge Gorgonian Sea Fans, a large variety of marine life and breathtaking underwater scenery.

Diving at Ko Haa is suitable for divers and snorkellers of all levels. Ko Haa’s scuba diving highlights include The Lagoon, The Cathedral and The Chimney. - All levels Trips on Thursdays and some Sundays, Journey Time 1 hr 4 mins

Experience amazing underwater scenery. Swim in an underwater coral garden with Hawksbill turtles and colourful reef fish galore.

Ko Rok has beautiful, powder white-sandy, twin beaches, which are home to untouched tropical rainforest and some inquisitive Giant Monitor Lizards. Below the tranquil surface, enjoy swimming in an underwater aquarium and coral garden amongst an abundance of maze and brain corals, sea anemones and tropical reef fish. Turn and look into the blue for a chance to catch a glimpse of giant Marble Rays and inquisitive Batfish on the Southern Drift dive.

Southern Islands

Divers and Snorkelers
- All levels Trips on Sundays, Journey Time 1 hr

A muck divers paradise with virgin corals and great macro-life. Explore the Emerald Cave – a secret lagoon and smugglers den, hidden inside the island of Ko Mook.

Ko Kradan offers virgin reefs and coral species not found at other dive sites in our area filled with rare and unusual speciaies. Although the visibility tends to be not quite so good as at some of our other sites, the sheer abundance of soft bushy corals and life packed amongst them mean that the Southern Islands are a Macro-lovers heaven. Ko Mook and Ko Wean are great places to explore and look for Seahorses, Pipefish and brightly coloured Nudibranches. There is a pod of Cobia that can be glipmsed around Cobia Point and don't miss the lunchtime snorkel into the Emerald Cave for a chance to experience this breathtaking natural phenomenon.

Hin Daeng & Hin Muang

Advanced / Experienced Divers Only
- Trips on Mondays, Wednesday, Saturdays, Journey Time 2-2.5 hrs

Experience world-class diving at the deepest drop-off in Thailand. Famous for spotting larger marine life such as Manta Rays and Whale Sharks.

These two world-class dive sites offer fantastic diving with spectacular pelagic schooling fish displays. Hin Daeng is the deepest drop off in Thailand and divers come from all around the world to look for larger marine life here, such as Manta Rays and the occasional Whale Shark. Everything seems to be a little bit larger at these sites with impressive Giant Moray Eels that can often be witnessed hunting and large schools of giant trevally, barracuda and rainbow runners providing an impressive backdrop. Hin Daeng had the highest number of Whale Shark sightings last year of all Thailand's Dive Sites. Due to the greater depths and currents, these sites can be extremely challenging and are only suitable for Advanced Divers with a minimum of 20 dives who have dived recently.

Ko Phi Phi

Divers Only (Not Suitable for Snorkelers)
- Tips on Tuesdays & Fridays, Journey Time 2 hrs

Home of the Leopard Shark, famous for giant sea fans. Breathtaking underwater scenery and a huge variety and abundance of marine life.

The Bida Islands are considered to be among the best sites to dive in the Phi Phi Island group. Bida Nok, Bida Nai and Hin Bida (also known as Phi Phi Shark Point) take 4-5 days to explore all the best parts. Packed in amongst the rugged underwater topography at these famous sites, you can find Leopard Sharks, Black Tip Reef Sharks, huge Gorgonian Sea Fans, a large variety of marine life big and small, all crammed into the breathtaking underwater scenery. There's also a good chance to spot giant sea turtles and a great range of cephalopods such as Big Red Octopus, Squid and the impressive Pharoah's Cuttlefish. Depending on the choice of dive site available on the day, a trip to see the famous Maya Bay where 'The Beach' was filmed may be a possible treat.

Kled Gaeow Wreck (newly sunk)

Advanced / Experienced Divers Only
- Trips on Most Fridays, Journey Time 2 hrs

Dive the newly-sunk Ked Gaeow Wreck, a retired Gunship that was originally launched in 1948 as the RNoMS Norfest (Norway) in 1948. It was bought and commissioned into the Royal Thai Navy and renamed Kled Gaeow in 1956. It has now found its final resting place by being purposely sunk just off Phi Phi Ley on the 19th March 2014. The 50m steel-hulled vessel lies at a depth of 26m, with the top of the tower at around 14m.

The Wreck has been prepared to allow for safe penetration and a number of entries with rope guides have been created. At the bow you can find the cooler room that was used to keep produce fresh. Follow the large guide rope from the back of the cooler room leading you out towards the main storage area in the hull and up and through the tower. At the back of the hull, where the engine used to be, there is a small (square) porthole, which is just big enough to fit a diver with tank on and leads into a largish compartment. As you enter this compartment, turn right and follow the staircase on your right, which leads back up into the tower. At the bow of the wreck there is another compartment where the anchor and chains would have been kept. This compartment has a roof hatch entry and also a door to exit. Attached is a line from the tower to assist in safety stops and this is buoyed with an 8" buoy at around 3 meters from the surface. Due to the greater depths, currents and often limited visibility, these sites can be fairly challenging and are only suitable for Advanced Divers with a minimum of 20 dives who have dived recently.

Shark Point, Anemone Reef and the King Cruiser Wreck

Advanced / Experienced Divers Only
- Trips on Some Fridays, Journey Time 3 hrs

This eerie shipwreck attracts enormous numbers of fish. Shark Point and Anemone Reef are covered in abundant soft corals.

Dive the famous King Cruiser Wreck, an 85 meter long passenger catamaran ferry that lies upright in 32 meters of water. This huge artificial reef has evolved into a fantastic natural reef and is home to a large variety of marine life as well as attracting giant schools of travelly, snappers and other schooling fish to seek shelter within its vast hulk.. Big open passage ways, car deck and bridge area make for easy exploration, take care though as surfaces have become encrusted with coral and barnacles and are extremely sharp. On the upper levels you'll spot lionfish and big schools of fusiliers and around the hull you may see barracuda and jacks patrolling. Nearby Shark Point & Anemone Reef have some of the most colourful and spectacular soft corals in the area. Due to the greater depths, currents and often limited visibility, these sites can be fairly challenging and are only suitable for Advanced Divers with a minimum of 20 dives who have dived recently.

Plunge (Boats & Equipment)

Our dive boats depart directly from the Pimalai Jetty in Kantiang Bay everyday during high season. Depending on the tide, divers may require a short transfer via longtail boat from the beach to the dive boat.

PADI eLearning Course Options

PADI eLearning allows you to start your dive course online, so you can complete all the theory, knowledge development sections and final exam before you come on holiday - saving you valuable holiday time. The practical part of the course you take in Ko Lanta is reduced to reflect the fact that you have partially completed the course already. The on-line section of the course is valid for 12 months - so you have 1 year in which to complete the course from when you start.

PADI eLearning courses have a fee that you must pay direct to PADI when you sign-up for the online section of the course. This gives you access to the online knowledge development program for one year, and lifetime online access to the latest version of the PADI Manuals. It also means you can spend less time in the classroom and more time on the beach, while you're on holiday! Scubafish At Pimalai offers discounted rates to complete the practical sections of the course, here in Ko Lanta.

To sign-up and get started right away on the online section of any PADI eLearning Course - please visit this link: https://www.padi.com/elearning-scuba-registration/default.aspx?irra=36035.

Medical Considerations for Diving

If you would like to enroll on any PADI Course - you are required to complete the PADI Medical Form. If you can answer 'No' to every question then you do not require a physician's examination or approval to start a dive course. If you answer 'Yes' to any question(s), we require the PADI Medical Form to be completed and signed by your doctor in order for you to enrol on a PADI dive course.

If you have any health concerns about diving, pre-existing medical conditions and/or will be taking any medication whilst on holiday, please download the PADI Medical Form and discuss and complete with your doctor or physician before signing up for any dive courses. The form includes guidelines that enable physicians who are not familiar with scuba diving to make informed decisions about your fitness to dive.

This form is also available in other languages. Please visit this link http://scubafish.com/downloads-area/padi-forms/

if you would prefer to download the PADI Medical Form in your own language.

Advise about Booking Ahead

We tend to be busiest during December, January & February. To avoid disappointment, it's a good idea to book ahead during these times, especially if you have specific dive sites or dates in mind.

During the rest of the year a day or two's notice is usually enough. The latest we take bookings is up to 5pm the evening before you want to dive. If you're staying at Pimalai, organising diving is very easy. We have a dive centre in the resort so you can just pop in to arrange your diving and get signed in. We are pretty flexible and aim to accommodate every request.

Weather Forecasts predict thunderstorms for Ko Lanta - what's the weather really like? For some reason weather forecasts such as CNN and BBC seem to predict thunderstorms all year round in Ko Lanta - so we get asked this question a lot! In actual fact, the weather conditions in Ko Lanta follow a fairly predictable pattern and are pleasant or hot all year round with blue skies and sunshine :) The temperature remains fairly constant all year round at 30-35 degrees C. The humidity and rainfall vary according to the season. During the two Monsoon months (May and September) we expect it to rain most days and sometimes all day and from May to September it is pretty humid. During the remainder of the year it is hot and dry with blue skies and sunshine with the occasional 20 minute heavy shower (spectacular in it's heaviness and a welcome relief as it cools things down). As we are in a tropical rainforest climate, rain is common - but not unpleasant!

From October through to mid-January we expect the 20 min shower approximately 3-4 times per week (and it often comes at the same time each day). From Mid-January to April it rarely rains at all and gets increasingly hotter and drier.

Pretty much all-year-round, we expect diving to be possible every day and for it to be blue skies and sunshine for the most part.

Things to Bring on the Dive Trip

  • Diving certification card
  • Log book
  • Swimming gear
  • Any of your own equipment
  • Sun cream
  • Camera
  • Book or iPod

Group Sizes

Our maximum group size is four divers with one guide. More importantly, we group people according to their experience level - so if you are the only person at your level, you would have a guide to yourself. If you'd prefer a private guide or instructor for yourself or your group, we can arrange this for you for a small additional fee. If you wish to dive with very specific requirements (e.g. very slowly to take photos) we highly recommend booking a private guide.

Optional 3rd Dives

Whenever possible (on most, but not all trips), we offer the option of a 3rd dive. You can decide on the day if you would like to sign up for the third dive – just let your guide or instructor know. Third dives are charged at 1,000 THB per person. If you prefer not to do a third dive you can choose to snorkel or simply relax on the boat.

Bringing Your Own Equipment:

We're happy to take care of your dive equipment during your stay so that you don't have to carry it on and off the boat each day. Bring it with you on your first day's diving, or drop it off at the dive centre the day before, and we'll have it ready for you on the boat each day that you're booked to dive. We'll also wash it after each day's diving and dry and re-pack it for you after your final dive. We offer our divers an extra-special service, because we know that when you're on holiday, the less you have to think about, the better!

Bringing an Underwater Camera System

We are underwater-photographer friendly! Both our boats are equipped with fresh-water wash tanks for underwater photography equipment. We also have a professional photographer onboard on every trip - so, should you need any help or assistance, there is always a knowledgeable person on hand to assist!

Do I Have To Dive on Consective Days on a Multi-Day Dive Package? For multi-day dive packages, you can take your dive days whenever you like (they do not have to be consecutive days).

We also offer rolling packages to give you the most flexibility. You can initially sign up for the 3-Day Package and then continue to dive as many days as you like (they do not have to be consecutive days) and we will calculate the best package rate we can for you - the more you dive the cheaper it gets!

What's the Deepest Depth I can Dive? That depends on your certification level. We only take divers to the maximum depth that they have been trained and certified to dive at:
  • Non-Certified Diver - 12m
  • Scuba Diver - 12m
  • Junior Open Water Diver (Aged 10 & 11) - 12m
  • Open Water Diver - 18m
  • Junior Advanced Open Water Diver (Aged 12-14) - 21m
  • Advanced Open Water Diver 30m
  • Specialty Deep Diver - 40m
Whilst some dive centres may be quite relaxed about taking certified divers below the depth that they have been certified to, we have sought clarification from PADI about the best way to handle such requests.

PADI have advised that both individual and company insurances have become stricter over the last few years and will only cover divers who dive within the limits of their training. As a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort, we will only guide divers within the limits to which they have been trained.

Diving at Hin Daeng & Hin Muang

Hin Daeng & Hin Muang offer fantastic diving and are considered world-class dive sites. Hin Daeng is the deepest drop off in Thailand and divers come from all around the world to look for larger marine life here, such as Manta Rays and the occasional Whale Shark. This year Hin Daeng has been lucky enough to have the highest number of Whale Shark sightings of all the dive sites in Thailand.

Hin Daeng & Hin Muang are located approximately 70km south-west from Kantiang Bay in Ko Lanta and diving conditions can be hard to predict. Sometimes visibility can be 40m+ with no currents but at other times currents can be pretty strong and if there is a lot of plankton (good for attracting the larger marine life) the visibility can be reduced. We make trips out to Hin Daeng & Hin Muang on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays during the high season, and on request during the low season (usually around once to twice per week).

Our general recommendation for divers wishing to dive at Hin Daeng & Hin Muang is that you hold an Advanced certification (or equivalent), or have logged at least 25 dives and have previous experience of diving at depth and in current. We also recommend that you have dived recently (within the last 2-3 months).

If you are not an Advanced Diver already, we would recommend that you make your first day's diving at Ko Haa, Ko Rok or Ko Phi Phi. This will give you a chance to refresh your diving skills and make sure that you are feeling relaxed and confident in the water. It will also give your guide a chance to see if you will enjoy the dives out at Hin Daeng & Hin Muang. For most Open Water divers, it is then possible to enjoy diving at these sites if conditions are favourable. If you would like to dive deeper than 18m, you should consider taking the Deep Dive Adventure Dive, which would certify you to dive to 30m without completing the whole Advanced Course. This can also be completed during your first day's diving at one of the more predictable dive sites. The Deep Adventure Dive counts towards the 5 Adventure Dives required to become certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. Adventure Dives are charged at 1,500 THB in addition to a normal day's diving. There are discounts if you make more than 1 adventure dive in a day.

Professional Underwater Photographer Onboard

One of our Liquid Lense professional photographer's and/or videographer's accompanies each trip capturing underwater images of you and the fantastic things you see. This is shown after the trip with a option to purchase if you wish.

The prices for the photos are as follows:
  • 1 Photo - 600 THB
  • 5 Photos - 1,000 THB
  • 10 Photos - 1,500 THB
  • 15+ - 2,000 THB (includes all the photos from the day + 50 Bonus 'Best Of')
Payment:
Please note that you must pay all your diving expenses at the Dive Centre  – as opposed to the resort’s front office operation as in the past.

We are able to accept VISA and Mastercard. We are in the process of trialing a new system for which there is no charge to pay via Credit Card - this seems to work for most, but not all guests. Otherwise we have a standard Credit Card system for which the bank charges a 5% handling fee. If you prefer to pay cash, there are several ATM machines just outside on the main road. For all diving and related services, we take full payment up front and operate the following cancellation policy:

Diving Cancellation Policy:
Your booking is not confirmed until we have received your deposit. If you wish to cancel or change the date of your trip, you may do so, without penalty, up until 5pm the day before the trip. If you cancel after 5pm, or you are unable to join the trip as planned for any reason, the following cancellation fees apply:
  • Snorkeling Deposit/Cancellation Fee - 1,000 THB
  • Diving/DSD Deposit/Cancellation Fee - 2,000 THB
  • PADI Courses Deposit/Cancellation Fee - 8,000 THB
  • Each attempted dive is charged as a full dive
If diving is cancelled due to weather, we operate a full refund service
